Contaminated Drinking Water - A Real Problem

Contaminated drinking water is ingested by millions, residues of chlorine in water is the most common problem to be found, drugs in water are also found and thankfully these can be filtered out.

We are being subjected to drinking water contaminants from many different sources.

This can start with chlorine being used as a disinfectant at the local water treatment system. The levels of chlorine in drinking water are of increasing concern owing to the mounting evidence linking chlorine byproducts to a wide list of serious health risks.

For the present chlorine fulfills a vital role in removing pathogens from our water supply, evenso there is a real need to eliminate the byproducts of this process from the water we eventually drink. Home water filtration systems are recognized as a viable solution to this problem the world over.

The last thing we should expect to find is prescription drugs in water and yet they are found in US, Canadian, Countries in Europe and Asia's drinking water.

Along with a whole array of anti-biotics used by humans to prevent or cure infections there is also slow release steroids that are used in the farming industry to cause the stock to bulk out or fatten up. And what does not get metabolized in our or the animals bodies becomes a waste product and is then efficiently removed from our system in the way of all animal and humankind, excrement.

The contamination highlighted above which results in drugs being found in drinking water occurs after the consumption of pharmaceutical drugs, the example below demonstrates how contamination is found soon after manufacture.

India is amongst the worlds leading exporters of non branded or generic drugs manufactured for a variety of ailments.

These are produced to help with conditions such as gonorrhea, heart disease, hyper tension, depression and many more illnesses. In one area where over 90 pharmaceutical factories manufacture these drugs the waste water used in their production is processed through a local water treatment plant and then discharged into the local river. High levels of the drugs were found in the river water downstream from the treatment plant.

This draws our attention to the fact that throughout the world many existing water treatment works were not specifically designed to remove pharmaceutical drugs and other compounds. This is confirmed by drugs being found in water that has been tested, so this means these are being processed by the bodies of those drinking this contaminated water. Water pollution by drugs may be what has been described by some as a "newly emerging issue", but one thing is for certain it is not one to be considered lightly.

A quality drinking water filter system will protect us from this modern phenomenon. It will need to be able to remove synthetic organic chemicals (SOCs) and volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) so check for this on its data sheet.

A point of use water filter is the answer.

As demonstrated above local authorities and water companies endeavors to maintain and provide healthy drinking water are increasingly challenged. The reason being is that sources of contamination are not diminishing rather they are on the increase.

We cannot stop people pouring things down the drain, nor using whats accepted as safe chemicals on their lawns or agricultural fields, neither can we stop a whole manner of other substances being poured into the environment.

But like it or not we will sooner or later have to accept the fact that it will end up in the water supply. And these contaminants bring with them a whole host of health risks. You can find a list of them on this link
